The Church of the Immaculate Conception and St Dominic was commissioned by Mother Margaret Hallahan, concurrently with her establishing St Dominic's Convent. The whole was designed as a 'book of the poor', depicting the principal truths of faith and also some of the history of the Dominican order. The foundation stone was laid in 1853.

Subsequently the tiny school chapel of St Anne was designed by A. W. Pugin and built for Barberi, in 1843-4. This survives in use in the grounds of the convent and is associated with a small burial ground. It cost £600 and has an east window by William Wailes. Arnold Sutherland Constable, the architect of St. Dominic's, was born in England. He brought with him a knowledge and love of the English Gothic style when he moved to Seattle and began work with the architectural firm of Beezer Brothers.

The foundations of St. Dominic's Convent were begun on 15th August 1852 on Pinfold Croft, on land given by Mr. James Beech of the parish. The first Sisters arrived on 23rd July 1853 and on 4th August the same year the foundation stone was laid by Bishop Ullathorne. The Convent was built bit by bit.

A Roman Catholic church of 1852-4 by Charles Hansom, completed 1861-3 by Gilbert Blount. MATERIALS: The church is constructed of stone, with a slate roof. PLAN: The church is aligned liturgically east - west, with a nave with north and south aisles and a small tower at the western end. There are two transepts and the sanctuary at the eastern.
